Adobe Type Manager

A software that performs the process of scaling type 1 fonts to the requested size.


This refers to a manual process whereby an air stream is blown onto paper sheets to create a riffling effect that separates the sheets as they are fed to the printing press.


Advanced Function Presentation. (formerly Advanced Function Printing). One of several print stream formats. Others are LCDS, PDF, PostScript, etc.

Against the Grain

At right angles to the grain direction of the paper being used, as compared to with the grain. Also called across the grain and cross grain. See also Grain Direction.


Type 5 1/2 points in depth, the smallest ordinarily used in newspapers (72 points equal one inch). Usually used for sports statistics.

Agate Line

In newspaper classifieds, a measurement denoting 1/4 inch depth by one column width. 14 agate lines = one column inch.


(Automotive Industry Action Group) A group made up of manufacturers in the automobile industry that have formulated labeling and packaging standards for sub-assembly automotive vendors.

Pen-shaped tool that sprays a fine mist of ink or paint to retouch photos and create continuous-tone illustrations.

Albion Press

A hand operated printing press made of iron.

Album Marks

Discoloration or heavy indentations on the corners of the cards from the acid, leaching out of the antique album pages, or from weight.

Album Paper

A wood pulp paper with an antique finish used for pages of photo albums.

Albumen Plate

A surface plate used in the lithography process; it has a photosensitive coating.

Albumin Paper

A coated paper used in photography; the coating is made of albumen (egg whites) and ammonium chloride.


A mathematical formula that determines how dots are arranged in a halftone image.
